Biography

Under the moniker Sessa, Brazilian musician Sérgio Sayeg crafts intricate pop songs that evoke the spirit of classic Tropicália, subtly incorporating elements of bossa nova and Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Born in São Paulo, Sayeg spent a significant portion of his early career in New York City, where he co-founded the psych-funk band Garotas Suecas. His solo career officially launched in 2019 with the release of his debut album, "Grandeza," on the Mexican Summer label. This album showcased a minimalist yet sophisticated sound, drawing inspiration from Brazilian music legends like Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim, as well as the introspective style of Leonard Cohen.

Following the global pandemic, Sessa established himself primarily back in Brazil, leading to the release of his sophomore album, "Estrela Acesa," in 2022. This record expanded upon his signature sound by introducing new textures, including string arrangements and a more layered production, while still maintaining his core of melodic songwriting and Afro-Brazilian percussion. His subsequent album, "Pequena Vertigem de Amor" (2025), delved into themes of fatherhood, exploring a more meditative and psych-folk-influenced sonic landscape.

Sessa's music is characterized by its fusion of traditional Brazilian musical elements with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is both timeless and modern. His work often explores themes of love, sensuality, and spiritual transcendence, delivered through his distinctive Portuguese lyrics and arrangements that blend acoustic guitar, subtle percussion, and ethereal backing vocals. He is recognized for his ability to weave diverse musical references into a cohesive and unique artistic vision, positioning him as a significant voice in contemporary Brazilian music.
