Biography
Shaman was a prominent Brazilian power and progressive metal band formed in 2000 by former members of Angra, including vocalist Andre Matos, bassist Luis Mariutti, and drummer Ricardo Confessori. Shortly after their formation, guitarist Hugo Mariutti joined the group, completing the classic lineup that defined the band's initial era. Their landmark debut album, Ritual, was released in 2002 and achieved massive commercial and critical success, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide and blending heavy metal with classical and world music elements. The track "Fairy Tale" notably became part of the soundtrack for a Rede Globo telenovela, marking a milestone for Brazilian heavy metal. Following subsequent studio releases such as Reason and internal lineup changes that brought in members like Thiago Bianchi, the band solidified their status as a pillar of the South American metal scene.
The group experienced several hiatuses and transformations over the years, including the formation of the spin-off band Noturnall by subsequent members in 2013. In 2018, the original classic lineup triumphantly reunited for a series of emotional reunion tours across Brazil and Latin America. However, tragedy struck in June 2019 with the sudden passing of beloved frontman Andre Matos. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, the band enlisted vocalist Alírio Netto to honor Matos's legacy and continue their musical journey, culminating in the 2022 release of their final studio album, Rescue, before officially disbanding in early 2023.
Throughout their career, Shaman shared stages with international icons like Iron Maiden and Deep Purple while deeply influencing the Brazilian heavy metal landscape alongside peers such as Angra and Viper. Their musical synthesis of heavy riffs, ethnic percussion, and soaring operatic vocals earned them enduring acclaim. Even after their ultimate dissolution, their contributions to the genre remain deeply celebrated by fans and musicians across Brazil and beyond.
