Biography

Silveira (Nivaldo Pedro da Silveira) and Barrinha (Abílio Barra) were a seminal Brazilian sertaneja duo, renowned for their "chorado e chonado" style, which deeply resonated with the emotional core of Minas Gerais' rural culture.

Their musical journey began in the countryside, where they first sang together at local festivals. A fateful train journey between São Paulo and Goiás led to their reunion and the decision to pursue music professionally. This serendipitous meeting, where Silveira played the viola and Barrinha shared a newly composed poem, captivated fellow passengers and marked the birth of their iconic duo.

Their career gained momentum after moving to Rio de Janeiro and subsequently São Paulo, where a chance encounter with a record label executive, impressed by their authentic "caipira" style, led to their first recording in March 1955. They became pioneers in blending poetry with sertaneja music, earning the affectionate nickname "A Dupla dos 22 Estados" (The Duo of the 22 States) for their extensive national tours. Their legacy includes numerous hits and a profound impact on the evolution of Brazilian country music, characterized by its emotional depth and storytelling.
