Biography

Simon Spang-Hanssen is a Danish jazz saxophonist, composer, and painter born on April 13, 1955, in Copenhagen. He began playing the saxophone in 1970 and became a professional musician in 1976, joining John Tchicai's Strange Brothers. Throughout his career, Spang-Hanssen has collaborated with a diverse range of international musicians and has a notable connection with Brazilian artists.

His musical journey includes forming his own quartet, Spacetrain, in 1978, and receiving the Ben Webster Prize in the same year. A significant period in his career was his involvement with the band of Brazilian drummer Nenê in 1983, which led to tours in Denmark and France and the recording of two albums. This collaboration highlights his engagement with Brazilian rhythms and musical traditions, a theme that has continued to influence his work.

Spang-Hanssen lived in Paris from 1985 to 1998, where he performed with various ensembles, including the Orchestre National de Jazz. Upon returning to Copenhagen, he continued to lead and form new musical projects, often incorporating elements of world music and fusion. His artistic endeavors extend beyond music, as he is also a painter, with his visual art often reflecting the same dynamism and creativity found in his compositions. He has also explored Afro-Jazz fusion, collaborating with artists like Saba and featuring musicians from Brazil and Mauritius in his projects.
