Biography
Formed in 1991 in Belo Horizonte, Skank emerged as one of the most commercially successful and creatively restless bands in Brazilian rock history. Initially composed of Samuel Rosa, Henrique Portugal, Lelo Zaneti, and Haroldo Ferretti, the group started with a heavy emphasis on Jamaican rhythms like ska, reggae, and dancehall, which they filtered through a Brazilian pop sensibility. Their breakthrough came with the 1994 album 'Calango', featuring hits like 'Jackie Tequila', which solidified their presence in the national music scene. \n\nBy the mid-1990s, Skank reached a peak of mass popularity with 'O Samba Poconé' (1996), an album that sold nearly two million copies and spawned the international hit 'Garota Nacional'. During this period, the band began collaborating with iconic figures of Brazilian music, such as Roberto Carlos for tribute projects and various artists from the Clube da Esquina movement. Their sound was a bridge between the energy of early 90s rock and the rhythmic richness of the Minas Gerais musical tradition. \n\nIn the early 2000s, the band underwent a significant stylistic shift with albums like 'Maquinarama' and 'Cosmotron', moving away from their signature brass-heavy ska sound toward Britpop, psychedelic pop, and indie rock. This era saw deep collaborations with songwriter Nando Reis and Arnaldo Antunes, resulting in poetic and sophisticated hits like 'Resposta' and 'Vou Deixar'. The band also became known for digital innovation, winning a Gold Lion at Cannes for the social media project 'Skankplay'. \n\nAfter nearly three decades of career and over six million records sold, Skank announced their disbandment in 2019 to pursue individual projects. Their farewell tour, which took place between 2022 and 2023, culminated in a massive final performance at the Mineirão stadium in their hometown. This historic show featured a special appearance by the legendary Milton Nascimento, marking the end of one of Brazil's most enduring musical legacies.
