Biography

Smack was a pioneering Brazilian post-punk band formed in São Paulo in 1983. Known for their raw and experimental instrumentation, the group brought together notable musicians from the underground scene, including Sandra Coutinho, Sérgio Pamplona, Edgard Scandurra, and Thomas Pappon. Their sound drew inspiration from international acts while firmly establishing itself within the vibrant Brazilian alternative landscape of the 1980s.

The band released their debut album, "Ao Vivo no Mosh", in 1985 through the independent label Baratos Afins, recorded live in the studio without an audience due to budget constraints. Following the departure of Edgard Scandurra to focus on Ira!, the remaining members recorded their second full-length album, "Noite e Dia", in 1986 before initially disbanding. Throughout their history, the group collaborated and shared musical ties with other prominent Brazilian artists such as Itamar Assumpção and Charles Gavin.

After years of inactivity, Smack reunited in 2004 with new drummer Pitchu Ferraz, eventually releasing the EP 3 in 2008 via Midsummer Madness. The band's journey came to a definitive end following the death of vocalist Sérgio Pamplona in November 2015. Despite their sporadic output, Smack remains a cult reference in the history of Brazilian independent rock.
