Biography
Solano Ribeiro was a prominent Brazilian music producer, critic, and television director, best known for idealizing and promoting the legendary Brazilian Popular Music festivals during the 1960s. Born in São Paulo, he initially pursued dramatic arts and worked as a theater actor before briefly serving as the vocalist for the rock band The Avallons. Transitioning into television production, he shaped the cultural landscape of Brazil by coordinating programming for TV Excelsior and later spearheading groundbreaking music festivals that launched iconic artists such as Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, and Edu Lobo.
Throughout his illustrious career, Ribeiro collaborated with numerous cultural luminaries including Rogério Duprat, Nara Leão, and Geraldo Vandré, helping to define the golden age of Brazilian television musicals. His visionary direction produced landmark shows like Som Livre Exportação and international award-winning documentaries, such as Novos Baianos FC for German television. As an independent record producer and media executive, he continued to champion Brazilian culture, working with artists like Marlui Miranda and Egberto Gismonti, while also leaving a lasting mark on advertising and radio.
In his later years, Ribeiro remained a vital figure in Brazilian arts as a radio host on Rádio Cultura Brasil, where he presented the program Solano Ribeiro e a Nova Música do Brasil until his passing. He documented his rich professional journey in his 2003 memoir, Prepare Seu Coração. His legacy endures as a foundational pillar in the promotion, discovery, and institutionalization of Brazilian popular music and television culture.
