Biography
Som Beat was a Brazilian rock band formed in São Paulo in the mid-1960s. The group was known for performing original compositions as well as covers of foreign hits, and participated in the popular "Jovem Guarda" television program multiple times. The band's sound was characteristic of the beat music genre, which fused rock and pop with a simple formation dominated by electric guitars, vocal harmonies, and catchy melodies.
Key members of Som Beat included José Aroldo Binda (vocals, guitar), Fafá (vocals, guitar), Zé Carlos (bass), and Tony Portella (drums). Portella was the initial drummer, later succeeded by Dartagnam and Norival D'Angelo. José Aroldo Binda was also a member of other notable Brazilian bands such as Os Incríveis and Casa das Máquinas. Sadly, Fafá and Zé Carlos have passed away.
Som Beat released a rare single in 1967 featuring their rendition of The Who's "My Generation" alongside their song "Sou Tímido Assim." The band also accompanied Nichollas Mariano on recordings of "Dita Cuja" and "Não Adianta Nada." Their music contributed to the vibrant Brazilian rock scene of the 1960s, a period heavily influenced by international beat and rock trends.
