Biography
Formed in São Paulo in 2019, Sophia Chablau e Uma Enorme Perda de Tempo is a quartet comprising Sophia Chablau, Téo Serson, Theo Ceccato, and Vicente Tassara. The band's name, which translates to 'Sophia Chablau and a Huge Waste of Time,' was inspired by a philosophy lecture regarding Theodor Adorno's concept of creative idleness—reclaiming 'wasted time' as a productive space for artistic experimentation. The group's chemistry began through long-standing friendships and a shared desire to explore a sound that bridges the gap between melancholic rock and avant-garde absurdity.
The band gained significant traction with their self-titled debut album in 2021, produced by the acclaimed artist Ana Frango Elétrico. The record established them as a prominent fixture in the Brazilian indie scene, earning critical acclaim from the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (APCA) and recognition from international outlets such as SPIN magazine. Their sound is an eclectic blend of indie rock, post-punk, and MPB, characterized by sharp lyrics and unpredictable arrangements that reflect the vibrant contemporary scene of São Paulo.
In 2023, they released their second studio effort, Música do Esquecimento, produced by Vitor Araújo. This album marked a transition toward a more collective songwriting process and featured collaborations with several figures of the contemporary Brazilian scene, including Negro Leo, Bebé, and Juliana Perdigão. The band continues to be a central part of the RISCO label's roster, representing a new wave of Brazilian rock that defies easy categorization while maintaining deep roots in the country's experimental music tradition.
