Biography
SP Funk is a Brazilian rap and hip hop group originating from the city of São Paulo in 1995. Initially founded by music producer Primo Preto and Mr. Bomba, the band soon underwent lineup changes with the addition of new members such as Maionese, Tio Fresh, and DJ Negralha, who would later join O Rappa. Throughout its history, the group stood out for adopting a stance distant from the gangsta rap subgenre, prioritizing messages of peace and reflection in its lyrics and artistic stance.
National recognition came in 1997 when the group was sponsored by the duo Thaíde and DJ Hum, participating in the compilation Rima Forte with the track "Fúria de Titãs". In 2001, they released their eagerly awaited debut album, O Lado B do Hip-Hop, which featured memorable collaborations from essential names in national rap such as Sabotage, Z'África Brasil, and RZO, as well as appearances by Thaíde and DJ Hum. This first work achieved great commercial repercussion and helped project the group's name, allowing them to share the stage with major international acts.
Seeking to renew its sound and maintain its success, SP Funk released its second studio album in 2006, titled Tá Pra Nóiz. The record invested in the fusion of rap with elements of Brazilian culture and featured production by DJ Hum, along with guest appearances by artists such as Negra Li, Mr. Catra, Lino Crizz, and musicians associated with Jorge Ben Jor. With a trajectory marked by important contributions to São Paulo's hip hop scene, the group consolidated its space in national urban music alongside references of the genre.
