Biography

Danish pianist, composer, and bandleader Steen Rasmussen has carved a significant niche in the contemporary jazz scene, particularly for his masterful fusion of Nordic sensibilities with warm Brazilian rhythms. His musical journey began with formal studies at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen from 1991 to 1995. Early in his career, he was a sought-after sideman for prominent Danish artists such as Søs Fenger, Lis Sørensen, and Marie Carmen Koppel.

Rasmussen is perhaps best known for his work with his own projects, most notably the Steen Rasmussen Quinteto, which has been active since 2007. This ensemble has released seven albums, garnered critical acclaim with numerous five-star reviews, and toured extensively across Denmark, Spain, Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia. His recordings often feature collaborations with renowned Brazilian musicians, including Airto Moreira, Joyce Moreno, Toninho Horta, Robertinho Silva, Paulo Braga, and Celso de Almeida, underscoring his deep connection to Brazilian music. His album "Lo Mejor de Cada Casa" (2013) was nominated for a Danish Jazz Grammy, and "Presenca" (2016) and "CANTA" (2019) received nominations for the Danish composers' prize CARL PRIZE.

His discography also includes collaborations with singer Josefine Cronholm, with whom he released "Milton på Svenska" in 2023, interpreting the repertoire of Milton Nascimento. Rasmussen's music is characterized by its sophisticated jazz arrangements, rhythmic complexity, and a melodic grace that bridges the gap between European and Brazilian musical universes. He is recognized for his ability to create music that is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant, earning him a reputation as a leading figure in Brazilian-inspired jazz.
