Biography

Stress is a pioneering Brazilian traditional heavy metal band formed in Belém, Pará, in October 1974. Founded by drummer André Chamon, alongside vocalist Roosevelt Bala and other early members, the group forged a heavy and fast sound distinct from the prevailing disco culture and progressive rock of the era. They are widely recognized as the very first band to release a heavy metal album in Brazil, releasing their self-titled debut in 1982.

Throughout the 1980s, the band relocated to Rio de Janeiro and became a central pillar of the Brazilian underground metal scene, mentoring younger acts like Sepultura. Despite facing censorship during the military dictatorship and struggling to secure commercial success with their major-label release "Flor Atômica" due to their insistence on singing in Portuguese, Stress maintained their uncompromising artistic vision. After a hiatus in the late 1980s, they returned in the 1990s and 2000s, receiving widespread international reissues and cementing their legacy in Brazilian rock history.
