Biography
Stuart was a Brazilian rock band formed in São Paulo in 1999. The group was conceived by guitarist and vocalist Kaly, who had been active in the Santa Catarina punk scene since 1993 with bands like Enzime and Big Head and the Drunks. Their musical influences drew heavily from the Gaúcho rock scene, citing bands such as Graforréia Xilarmônica, Replicantes, and Júpiter Maçã, as well as American folk-rock artists like Johnny Cash, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Neil Young. Kaly's songwriting was also inspired by Beat Generation literature and alternative lifestyles, with references to authors like John Fante and Charles Bukowski.
In 1999, under the pseudonym Stuart, Kaly recorded a CD-R titled "Trilha sonora para nossas vidas" (Soundtrack for Our Lives). The positive reception of this project encouraged him to form a band. By the late 1990s, Stuart, now a full band, performed with Wander Wildner, who re-recorded the song "Um bom motivo" (A Good Reason). In 2002, the band released an EP titled "Eu não quero ser Stuart" (I Don't Want to Be Stuart) and several singles, including "Punk falido" (Broke Punk), "Esperando te ver" (Waiting to See You), and "Pés no chão" (Feet on the Ground), which featured a music video produced by Ramiro Pisseti. Their 2006 album, "Honestidade não enche a barriga" (Honesty Doesn't Fill the Belly), marked a significant release in their discography.
The band's lineup evolved over time, with members contributing to their distinct sound. The initial formation included Kaly (guitar, vocals), Cristiano (guitar), Magola (drums), and Maneta (bass). Later iterations and related projects, such as the band Tihuana, which featured Léo Stuart on guitar, highlight the interconnectedness of the São Paulo rock scene. Léo Stuart, in particular, is noted for his work with Tihuana, a band that emerged from the underground scene and achieved significant commercial success in the early 2000s.
