Biography

Tamba Trio was an influential Brazilian musical ensemble formed in Rio de Janeiro during the 1960s. Originally consisting of Luiz Eça on piano, vocals, and arrangements, Bebeto Castilho on double bass, flute, saxophone, and vocals, and Hélcio Milito on drums, percussion, and vocals, the group began by accompanying notable vocalists such as Maysa and Leny Andrade at the Manhattan nightclub alongside musicians like Luís Carlos Vinhas and Roberto Menescal.

Throughout their career, the ensemble underwent various lineup changes and temporary hiatuses. In 1967, the addition of bassist Dório Ferreira turned the group into the quartet Tamba 4, while later years saw the participation of pianists like Laércio de Freitas and drummers such as Rubens Ohana. The group collaborated with and accompanied numerous prominent Brazilian artists, including Carlos Lyra, Edu Lobo, Nara Leão, Sylvia Telles, Quarteto em Cy, João Bosco, and Simone.

The original trio format returned in 1971 to record albums for RCA, followed by further reunions and the release of commemorative records like the 1982 LP Tamba Trio 20 Anos de Sucessos. The group's journey ultimately concluded in 1992 following the passing of founding member Luiz Eça, leaving a lasting legacy in Brazilian popular music and bossa nova history.
