Biography

Manoel Carlos Guerreiro Cardoso, known artistically as Teco Cardoso, was born in São Paulo on October 25, 1960. The son of a classical pianist and initially trained in medicine, he built a solid career as a saxophonist and flutist, dedicating himself to forging a typically Brazilian language for his instruments, which range from the saxophone family and transverse flutes to indigenous flutes, pifes, and bamboo flutes. His musical training involved fundamental institutions and associations with great masters, participating in the São Paulo Independent Music Movement in the late 1970s and joining the renowned Grupo Pau Brasil in the 1980s.

Throughout his career, Teco Cardoso established himself as a sought-after soloist, music producer, and partner to expressive names in instrumental music and MPB. In the 1990s, he co-founded the Núcleo Contemporâneo record label alongside Benjamim Taubkin and collaborated with artists of the caliber of Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi, Joyce, Baden Powell, João Donato, Moacir Santos, Paulinho Nogueira, Carlos Lyra, Mônica Salmaso, Renato Braz, and Léa Freire. In addition to his vast solo discography and work with groups such as Orquestra Popular de Câmara and Vento em Madeira, he has received important awards, including participations in Grammy-winning projects, such as the Jobim Sinfônico project and the album Randy Brecker in Brasil.

In addition to his intense activity on Brazilian and international stages, at jazz and world music festivals across Europe, the United States, and Japan, Teco Cardoso maintains a strong artistic and personal collaboration with singer Mônica Salmaso. His discography encompasses critically acclaimed albums, soundtrack work, and tributes to great Brazilian composers, always standing out for his research into sonorities and the appreciation of the country's musical identity.
