Biography

Teddy Vieira was an influential Brazilian composer and viola player born in Itapetininga, São Paulo, who played a foundational role in the development of traditional Brazilian country music, known as música sertaneja. During his career, he worked as an artistic director for major record labels such as Columbia and Chantecler, helping to shape the golden era of Brazilian rural music. Throughout his prolific songwriting career, he partnered with prominent artists of his time, including Lourival dos Santos and Carreirinho, creating enduring classics that defined the genre.

Among his most celebrated compositions are iconic standards like "O Menino da Porteira" and "Couro de boi", which were widely recorded and popularized by legendary duos such as Tonico e Tinoco. His lyrical storytelling vividly captured the realities, folklore, and romanticism of the Brazilian countryside, earning him a revered status among traditionalists and folklorists alike. His work remains a cornerstone of the sertanejo raiz tradition, inspiring generations of subsequent viola players and singers.

Tragically, Teddy Vieira's life was cut short in December 1965 when he died in a car accident on the Raposo Tavares Highway in his hometown of Itapetininga. Despite his untimely death at the age of 42, his musical legacy endures profoundly in Brazilian culture. Monuments have been erected in his honor in cities like Itapetininga and Ouro Fino, cementing his memory as one of the true patriarchs of Brazilian roots music.
