Biography

Francisco Tenório Cerqueira Júnior, better known as Tenório Jr., was born in Rio de Janeiro on July 4, 1940, and became one of the most important pianists of bossa nova and samba jazz. Raised in the Laranjeiras neighborhood, he performed frequently at the famous Beco das Garrafas and was part of landmark Brazilian music records alongside great names like Leny Andrade, Wanda Sá, and Edison Machado.

In 1964, at only 21 years old, he recorded his only solo album, the acclaimed record Embalo. His unique sound deeply marked the instrumental scene of the 1960s and 1970s, establishing him as one of the most sought-after pianists by prestigious artists, including Vinícius de Moraes and Toquinho, with whom he toured Argentina in March 1976.

During this tour in Buenos Aires, Tenório Jr. mysteriously disappeared and had his death confirmed decades later, becoming a tragic symbol of South American dictatorship violence. His memory and artistic legacy remain alive in the history of Brazilian instrumental music, influencing generations of musicians and inspiring various cinematic and literary tributes.
