Biography

Tião Carreiro e Pardinho was a Brazilian sertanejo music duo formed by José Dias Nunes (Tião Carreiro) and Antônio Henrique de Lima (Pardinho). The duo is considered one of the most important in the history of traditional sertanejo music and a pioneer in the creation of the pagode de viola, a variation of cateretê. Their career spanned two main periods: from 1954 to 1978 and from 1981 to 1993. Tião Carreiro, with his deep and unmistakable voice, led most of the interpretations, inverting the common standard of the time in which the higher voice was the first voice. This characteristic gave the duo a unique sonic identity that influenced generations of musicians.

The duo met in 1954 at the Rapa Rapa Circus in Pirajuí (São Paulo), when Tião still used the pseudonym Zé Mineiro. In 1956, they moved to São Paulo and met composer Teddy Vieira, who suggested the artistic name Tião Carreiro for José Dias Nunes. In the same year, they recorded their first record with Columbia, highlighting the songs "Cavaleiro do Bom Jesus" and "Boiadeiro Punho de Aço". Throughout their trajectory, Tião Carreiro & Pardinho were fundamental in popularizing sertanejo music, taking it from radio programs to theater stages, rodeos, and television, transforming rural caipira music into a Brazilian cultural heritage.

In addition to their musical career, the duo also acted in film and theater, participating in the movie "Sertão em Festa" and staging plays like "O Mineiro e o Italiano" and "Pai João". They recorded nearly 30 LPs, which were later remastered onto CDs, keeping alive a body of work that remains a reference for artists and fans of traditional sertanejo music. Tião Carreiro passed away in 1993, and Pardinho in 2001, but their musical legacy remains.
