Biography

Francisco das Chagas da Costa, known artistically as Tico da Costa, was a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist born in Areia Branca, Rio Grande do Norte, on November 13, 1951. He passed away on August 29, 2009, in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, after a battle with cancer. Costa's musical journey began in his youth, participating in festivals in his hometown and composing his first songs at the age of 13. He moved to Natal to pursue his studies and was recognized for his musical talent, leading him to study at the Conservatório Pernambucano in Recife. His artistic development continued in Europe, where he lived in Rome for a decade, further honing his skills and performing extensively across the continent.

Tico da Costa's music blended elements of Northeastern rhythms, choro, and bossa nova, characterized by intricate harmonies and polyrhythmic dynamism. He achieved international recognition, performing in renowned venues in New York such as Town Hall, Symphony Space, Knitting Factory, and the Blue Note. He shared stages with notable artists like Philip Glass and Pete Seeger and participated in festivals like the New Port Folk Festival and the New York Jazz Festival. His career spanned across Europe, North and South America, and Africa, solidifying his reputation as one of Brazil's most internationally acclaimed artists.

Throughout his career, Tico da Costa released numerous albums, with discographies spanning Brazil, Italy, and the United States. His collaborations included working with poet Ivan Wrigg on songs like "Pés no chão" and "Quarenta graus." After his passing, a series of tribute concerts titled "Várias Vozes, Um Só Canto" was established by his family and friends to honor his legacy and continue celebrating his music, with the 11th edition taking place in 2025.
