Biography
Titãs is one of the most influential and enduring rock bands in Brazil, formed in 1982 in the city of São Paulo. The group emerged from a circle of friends at Colégio Equipe, including future icons like Arnaldo Antunes, Nando Reis, and Paulo Miklos. Initially performing under the name Titãs do Iê-Iê, the band featured a massive and diverse lineup of nine members, which allowed for a "kaleidoscopic" musical approach that blended post-punk, new wave, and traditional Brazilian influences. Their early career was marked by the hit "Sonífera Ilha," which launched them into the national spotlight via popular television programs hosted by Chacrinha and Raul Gil.
The band reached their creative and commercial peak in the mid-1980s with the landmark album "Cabeça Dinossauro" (1986). Produced by Liminha, the record shifted their sound toward a more aggressive, raw rock aesthetic with sharp social critiques, solidifying their place in the "BRock" movement alongside contemporaries like Os Paralamas do Sucesso. Throughout the late 80s and 90s, they continued to experiment with genres ranging from grunge to electronic music. Despite the departure of Arnaldo Antunes in 1992, the band achieved massive success with the "Acústico MTV" project in 1997, which featured guest appearances by Brazilian legends such as Marisa Monte and Rita Lee.
The 21st century brought both tragedy and transformation for the group. In 2001, guitarist Marcelo Fromer died after a tragic accident in São Paulo, and shortly after, Nando Reis left to pursue a highly successful solo career. Nevertheless, the remaining members, led by Tony Bellotto, Branco Mello, and Sérgio Britto, continued to tour and record, even winning a Latin Grammy in 2009. In 2023, the classic lineup reunited for the "Titãs Encontro" tour, a massive stadium-run that celebrated their 40-year legacy and reaffirmed their status as pillars of Brazilian popular music.
