Biography

Antonio Carlos Gomes Conceição, widely known as Tonho Matéria, was born in Salvador, Bahia, on May 12, 1964. The artist stood out in the Bahian music scene not only as a singer and songwriter, but also as an important capoeirista, having been a member of the famous group Olodum during different periods of his career.

His career gained major prominence throughout the 1980s and 1990s, a period when he participated in important blockos and electric trios, in addition to releasing several successful solo albums, such as "Tá na Cara" and "Rum Bragadá". As a songwriter, Tonho Matéria wrote widely acclaimed songs for various prominent axé music and Bahian pagode artists and bands, collaborating with names like Luiz Caldas and Leci Brandão.

In addition to his strong contribution to Bahia's carnival and popular music, the artist also directed part of his energy toward social projects focused on capoeira starting in the 2000s. Combining Afro-Brazilian musicality with the tradition of carnival blockos, he cemented his name in the state's cultural history.
