Biography
Antônio Bento da Silva Filho, artistically known as Toni Garrido, was born in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro, on September 7, 1967. Raised in Copacabana by the Garrido family, he adopted the surname in honor of his guardian Ofélia. He began his artistic journey playing acoustic guitar and singing in churches, later passing through Banda Bel before achieving national prominence as the lead singer of the reggae band Cidade Negra starting in 1994. At the helm of the group, he landed expressive hits and top-selling albums, consolidating a pop and danceable sound within Brazilian reggae.
In addition to his striking stint with Cidade Negra, Toni developed an intense career as an actor, presenter, and solo artist. In cinema, he starred in the film Orfeu (1999), directed by Cacá Diegues, in addition to moving through various musical genres in side projects like Black Carlos, dedicated to the soul and funk of Roberto and Erasmo Carlos. Throughout his trajectory, he has collaborated with major names in Brazilian music, such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Roupa Nova, and Marcelo Falcão, as well as touring with shows dedicated to Bossa Nova and releasing solo works such as the album Baile Free.
Degreed in Physical Therapy and Physical Education, Toni established himself as one of the most versatile figures in Brazilian pop culture, standing out on television as a presenter and remaining active in the music scene with tours and contemporary partnerships, including collaborations with the band Angra. His contribution to national music spans reggae, MPB, and soul, maintaining a strong presence on stages and in the media.
