Biography

Antônio Viana Gomes, widely known as Toni Tornado, is a seminal Brazilian actor and singer, born on May 26, 1930. His career began in the 1960s under the stage name Tony Checker, where he performed as a dancer and lip-syncer, imitating artists like Chubby Checker and Little Richard. After a period in the United States, he returned to Brazil in 1969 and adopted the name Toni Tornado in 1970. He is recognized as one of the pioneers who introduced soul and funk music to the Brazilian music scene, heavily influenced by James Brown.

In 1970, Tornado achieved national recognition by winning the Brazilian stage of the V Festival Internacional da Canção with his soul song "BR-3," performed alongside Trio Ternura. This victory marked a significant moment for Brazilian soul and funk, contributing to the rise of the "Black Rio" movement. His self-titled debut album, released in 1972, is considered a landmark in Brazilian soul and funk, blending deep soul, psychedelic funk, and orchestral arrangements with a distinctively Brazilian swagger.

Beyond his musical achievements, Toni Tornado has also had a notable acting career, appearing in numerous telenovelas and miniseries. His most significant television role was portraying Gregório Fortunato in the 1993 miniseries "Agosto." He has also performed with his son, Lincoln Tornado, continuing to be an active presence in Brazilian culture. Tornado's music is often compared to that of Tim Maia, another giant of Brazilian soul music, highlighting his significant contribution to the genre.
