Biography

Raul Torres e Florêncio was an iconic Brazilian sertanejo music duo, formed by Raul Montes Torres (1906-1970) and João Batista Pinto (1910-1971). The duo officially formed in 1942, but the partners had already recorded together previously. Raul Torres, born in Botucatu, São Paulo, was one of the pioneers of caipira music, having collaborated with Cornélio Pires on the recording of the genre's first records. He was a prolific songwriter, with partnerships with major names such as João Pacífico, Carreirinho, and Tinoco.

Florêncio, a native of Barretos, São Paulo, came from a family of musicians and singers. He was a skilled viola player and his instrumental technique complemented Raul Torres's compositions. Together, they formed a lasting and influential partnership, recording over 100 songs and releasing dozens of 78 RPM records and LPs. Their repertoire included toadas, modas de viola, emboladas, rasqueados, and cateretês, portraying the sertanejo universe and rural life.

The duo is credited with consolidating a two-voice singing style in a medium register, which influenced many later duos, such as Tonico and Tinoco. One of their biggest hits was the moda de viola "A Moda da Mula Preta", from 1945, which became a caipira music classic. Raul Torres and Florêncio were not only singers, but also narrators of the Brazilian soul, immortalizing stories and emotions in their songs, leaving an immeasurable legacy for sertanejo culture.
