Biography

Antônio José dos Santos, widely known as Tostão or Tostão Mineiro, is a Brazilian accordionist celebrated for his mastery of sertaneja and chamamé music. Born in Romaria, Minas Gerais, on August 11, 1964, Tostão comes from a musical family and began playing the accordion at the tender age of five, guided by his father and uncles. His early influences included renowned chamamé artists like Isaco Abitbol and Tránsito Cocomarola, shaping his unique style from a young age. Tostão's professional career kicked off in 1978, with his first performance in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. He later moved to Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, where he joined the sertanejo duo Lourenço e Lourival until 1985. After this period, he embarked on a successful solo career, dedicating himself to the chamamé genre and captivating audiences with his energetic performances and innovative playing techniques.

Tostão's artistry extends beyond his technical skill; he is known for his charismatic stage presence and his ability to connect with the audience. He has released numerous albums and DVDs, reinterpreting chamamé classics and showcasing his own compositions, such as "Pantanal" and "Chamame de varanda." His music has taken him on extensive tours across Brazil, including Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul, as well as international performances in Milan, Italy. He is a regular participant in chamamé festivals, particularly in Corrientes, Argentina, where he is highly regarded.

Often referred to as the "King of Chamamé," Tostão is recognized for his unique approach to playing the accordion, often employing unconventional positions and techniques that make his performances visually and musically captivating. His dedication to preserving and evolving the chamamé tradition, combined with his vibrant personality, has solidified his status as a prominent figure in Brazilian instrumental music.
