Biography
Tribalistas is a renowned Brazilian supergroup formed in Salvador, Bahia, in 2002, through the artistic union of Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown, and Marisa Monte. The trio's encounter gave rise to a self-titled album released the same year by Phonomotor Records, distributed by EMI, which quickly became a commercial and cultural phenomenon. The record surpassed the mark of 2 million copies sold in Brazil alone, receiving a diamond certification, and achieved great international projection, especially in Europe and Argentina, consolidating itself as one of the biggest-selling successes for Brazilian artists abroad. Acclaimed by specialized critics, the work earned the group five nominations at the 2003 Latin Grammy Awards, winning the award for Best Contemporary Portuguese Language Pop Album.
After a fifteen-year hiatus punctuated only by very rare joint appearances and the release of the digital track "Joga Arroz" in 2013 in support of same-sex civil marriage, the trio returned to the studios. In 2017, Tribalistas released their second studio album, accompanied by a DVD featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the recordings. The release was followed by the group's first official tour, the Tribalistas Tour, held between 2018 and 2019. The series of shows broke box office records for national artists' tours, visiting several Brazilian capitals, as well as countries in Europe, the Americas, and the United States, where they stood out as headliners at the Lollapalooza festival. In 2019, the group announced a new indefinite hiatus in their joint activities.
The group's sound navigates through aspects of Brazilian popular music, blending elements of MPB, contemporary pop, and Bahian music. Throughout its trajectory, the project featured collaborations with important names from the national scene, such as singer Margareth Menezes, in addition to a solid backing band composed of renowned musicians. The relevance of Tribalistas remains alive in the history of modern Brazilian music, being frequently associated with other great exponents of MPB and artistic innovation in the country.
