Biography
O Trio Calafrio was a Brazilian musical group formed in 2001, composed of renowned samba composers Barbeirinho do Jacarezinho, Luiz Grande, and Marcos Diniz. The trio's name was suggested by the singer Zeca Pagodinho, a great admirer and interpreter of the members' compositions. The group is recognized for its ability to create sambas with sharp lyrics, intelligent humor, and a contagious rhythm, portraying Rio's street smarts ("malandragem") and the essence of hillside samba ("samba de morro").
The members already had well-established individual careers before the formation of the trio. Luiz Grande had compositions recorded by João Nogueira, while Marcos Diniz, son of Monarco da Portela, had his songs performed by Zeca Pagodinho and other artists. Barbeirinho do Jacarezinho also collaborated with various composers and participated in the "Quintal do Pagodinho" project. This individual background contributed to the richness and depth of Trio Calafrio's repertoire.
In 2002, Trio Calafrio released their self-titled debut CD, featuring arrangements by musicians such as Cláudio Jorge and Leandro Braga. The album highlighted the track "Dona Esponja," written by all three members. Throughout their career, the trio participated in various projects and shows alongside major names in samba, such as Zeca Pagodinho, Dorina, and Velha Guarda da Portela, cementing their importance in the Brazilian music scene.
