Biography
Trio Curupira is a Brazilian musical group formed in the mid-1996 in São Paulo. Initially composed by André Marques (piano), Ricardo Zohyo (bass) and Cleber Almeida (drums), the trio stood out for its creative and innovative approach to Brazilian instrumental music. The group's name is a reference to the mythical character of Brazilian folklore, protector of forests and animals, symbolizing the trio's mission to defend the music and culture of Brazil.
Since its foundation, Trio Curupira has dedicated itself to deep musical and cultural research, basing its work on genuine Brazilian music and exploring all its rhythms without barriers between styles. The group's sound is marked by density, rich harmony and strong personality, blending influences ranging from classical music, jazz, Arabic music and flamenco, to regional rhythms such as maracatu, baião, samba and frevo. This fusion of diverse cultural elements reflects Brazil's own miscegenation.
Throughout its trajectory, the trio underwent some changes in its lineup, with the departure of Ricardo Zohyo at the end of 2002 and the entry of Fábio Gouvêa, who contributed with his versatility as a guitarist and bassist. The group has gained national and international recognition, having performed at festivals such as Rock in Rio Lisboa and been nominated for awards such as the Latin Grammy and the Brazilian Music Award. In addition to original compositions, Trio Curupira has also interpreted works by other Brazilian composers, consolidating its position as one of the most relevant instrumental groups in the Brazilian musical scene. The trio has already collaborated with artists such as Hermeto Pascoal and Jane Duboc.
