Biography
Trio Melodia was a Brazilian musical trio formed by chance in Rio de Janeiro during the early 1960s, remaining active until 1973. The group originally consisted of singers Fredson Cerqueira, Welton Santana, and Noel, a member of the ensemble Cantores do Ébano. Their fortuitous formation began when Fredson and Noel met at a shoe store, leading to spontaneous vocal harmonization that inspired them to pursue a career together. They adopted their name after noticing a shoebox brand during one of their gatherings.
Throughout their career, the trio became closely associated with the Jovem Guarda movement, releasing notable works through major labels like CBS. In 1965, they released their self-titled debut LP, which featured Portuguese-language versions of international hits and traditional themes, such as 'Vale do Rio Vermelho' and 'Se o Seu Amor Fosse Pra Mim'. Their popularity earned them spots on the prestigious compilation series 'As 14 Mais'. They followed this success with a second album in 1966, 'Aproveita a Vida!', before shifting labels and eventually disbanding in 1973 as the musical landscape shifted.
Following the dissolution of the group, member Fredson pursued a solo career as a singer and songwriter. The trio left a distinct mark on the era's pop scene, frequently collaborating or sharing compilation spaces with prominent figures of the movement like Leno and Rossini Pinto. Their melodic style captured the romantic and pop sensibilities of 1960s Brazilian youth culture.
