Biography

Tulipa Ruiz is a prominent Brazilian singer, songwriter, and illustrator born in Santos, São Paulo, and raised partly in Minas Gerais. Growing up in a musical household—her father, Luiz Chagas, was a musician in the band Isca de Polícia accompanying Itamar Assumpção—she was immersed in artistic influences from a young age. Before launching her professional music career, she worked in journalism for nearly a decade after graduating from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP). Her musical trajectory shifted when she began collaborating with her brother and guitarist, Gustavo Ruiz, eventually leading to her acclaimed solo debut album, Efêmera, in 2010.

Her distinct musical style, which she playfully describes as "forest pop," bridges the urban energy of São Paulo with the gentle lyricism of Minas Gerais. Over the years, Tulipa has released several celebrated albums, including Tudo Tanto, Dancê—which won a Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album—and Habilidades Extraordinárias. Throughout her career, she has collaborated and shared the stage with numerous luminaries of Brazilian music, such as Marcelo Jeneci, Criolo, João Donato, and Zélia Duncan. In addition to her musical output, she is recognized for her visual arts, creating illustrations, album art, and her own clothing line, Brocal.

Tulipa continues to be a vital voice in contemporary Brazilian alternative music, performing at major festivals and engaging in diverse creative projects like TRAGO. Her artistic expression draws inspiration from legendary interpreters of Brazilian popular music such as Gal Costa, Ná Ozzetti, and Joyce, as well as international avant-garde figures. Through her evocative songwriting and distinctive vocal delivery, she remains a defining figure of her musical generation.
