Biography

José Antônio de Freitas Mucci, artistically known as Tunai, was born in Ponte Nova on November 13, 1950. Initially, he followed an academic path by studying Civil Engineering in Ouro Preto and Belo Horizonte, even working in the field before abandoning the profession to dedicate himself entirely to music. His artistic journey received a major boost in 1978, when Fafá de Belém recorded one of his compositions, marking the beginning of a prolific career as a singer and songwriter.

Throughout his career, Tunai formed a striking partnership with lyricist Sergio Natureza, creating songs that were interpreted by major names in MPB, such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Simone, Milton Nascimento, Beto Guedes, and Nana Caymmi. It was precisely Elis Regina who projected him nationally as a composer by recording hits like "As aparências enganam", considered by him to be his great milestone of consecration. As a solo singer, he achieved enormous prominence with the hit "Frisson", released on the 1984 album Em Cartaz.

Tunai passed away on January 26, 2020, the victim of a cardiac arrest at his residence in Rio de Janeiro. His musical work remained a benchmark of high quality in Brazilian composition, praised by critics and consolidating a striking discography that includes albums like Trovoada and Eternamente...
