Biography
Ultraje a Rigor is a seminal Brazilian rock band formed in São Paulo during the early 1980s. Founded by vocalist and guitarist Roger Moreira, the group emerged from the city's vibrant underground scene as a cover band before evolving into one of the leading names of the "BRock" movement. The early lineup featured guitar virtuoso Edgard Scandurra, who later left to focus on his other band, Ira!. The group's name was born from a pun on the Portuguese expression for formal wear ("traje a rigor"), solidifying their reputation for irreverence and biting social satire.
The band achieved national superstardom with their 1985 debut LP, 'Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia'. it became the first Brazilian rock album to earn gold and platinum certifications, propelled by hits like 'Inútil' and 'Mim Quer Tocar.' Despite their playful image, the band often faced friction with government censors, particularly with the song 'Filha da Puta' from the album 'Crescendo'. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, they maintained a presence in the media, collaborating with diverse acts ranging from the pop group Trem da Alegria to the legendary country duo Tonico & Tinoco.
In the 2010s, Ultraje a Rigor found a new role as the house band for talk shows hosted by Danilo Gentili, first on 'Agora É Tarde' and later on 'The Noite.' The current stable lineup features Marcos Kleine, Bacalhau, and Mingau. In 2023, the band faced a tragedy when long-time bassist Mingau was shot in Paraty, leading to his temporary replacement by Andria Busic. Due to Roger Moreira's fear of flying, the group primarily performs in the Southeast of Brazil, while a side project called The Ultrajantes was formed to tour other regions of the country.
