He began his political career in social movements, becoming president of the Metalworkers' Union of Santa Maria and regional vice-president of the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT) in the region. He joined the Workers' Party (PT) in 1986 and was first elected as a councilman in Santa Maria in 1988, later serving as mayor of the city from 2001 to 2009, and was re-elected for a second term. He has also served as a state deputy and president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul.

While primarily known for his political career, Valdeci Oliveira's background as a former metalworker and his involvement in trade unions suggest a connection to the working-class culture that has often influenced Brazilian music. His political activities in Rio Grande do Sul place him within a specific regional context that has produced notable musicians.

Although not primarily recognized as a musician, his public life has intersected with the cultural landscape of Brazil. His political career, spanning several decades, has seen him participate in various public events and initiatives that may have indirectly involved musical artists or cultural organizations.
