Biography

Norival Carlos Teixeira, better known as Valzinho, was a Brazilian visual artist, composer, and classical guitarist born in Rio de Janeiro. Active mainly from the 1930s to the 1950s, he became renowned for his advanced harmonic structures, leading figures such as Radamés Gnattali and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho to regard him as one of the precursors of Bossa Nova. He was the older brother of fellow composer Newton Teixeira and participated in Garoto's musical circle known as the "Bossa Clube".

His musical output yielded notable successes, most prominently "Tudo foi surpresa"—his debut composition written in 1937 with Peterpan—and "Doce Veneno". These compositions were recorded and interpreted by esteemed artists of Brazilian popular music including Aracy de Almeida, Elizeth Cardoso, Dalva de Oliveira, Jamelão, and Paulinho da Viola. His work was further celebrated in 1979 through a dedicated LP titled "Valzinho: Um Doce Veneno", recorded by Zezé Gonzaga with the Quinteto Radamés Gnattali.

Valzinho's legacy remains deeply intertwined with the evolution of Brazilian harmony and the transition toward modern samba and bossa nova styles. His enduring compositions have been revisited across generations by interpreters such as Maria Creuza, Jane Duboc, and Cynara. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 1980, leaving behind a profound influence on the landscape of MPB.
