Biography

Vanguart is a prominent Brazilian indie rock and folk band formed in 2002 in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, initially starting as a solo project by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Helio Flanders. Taking inspiration from diverse sources such as alternative rock, blues, classic rock, and regional musical styles of Mato Grosso, Flanders recorded early home-made albums before solidifying the group with members like Reginaldo Lincoln, David Dafré, Luiz Lazzaroto, and Douglas Godoy. The group gained national attention with their 2006 independent single "Semáforo" and their acclaimed self-titled debut album released in 2007 through Lobão's Outracoisa magazine, which established them firmly in the Brazilian independent music scene.

Over the years, Vanguart expanded their artistic footprint by releasing notable albums such as Boa Parte de Mim Vai Embora (2011) and Muito Mais Que o Amor (2013), the latter of which featured the hit track "Meu Sol" and cemented violinist Fernanda Kostchak as a permanent member. Known for their multilingual repertoire encompassing Portuguese, English, and Spanish, the band has frequently collaborated with and paid homage to other musical icons, recording covers of legendary figures like Dorival Caymmi, Luiz Gonzaga, and Tom Zé, alongside special guest appearances by artists like Mallu Magalhães.

Throughout their career, Vanguart has maintained a steady presence in the Brazilian alternative circuit, performing at major festivals like Lollapalooza Brasil and the Virada Cultural, while continuously evolving their sound through acoustic explorations and thematic releases, including tribute projects to Bob Dylan. Despite lineup changes over the decades, the core creative partnership of Helio Flanders and Reginaldo Lincoln has kept the band at the forefront of modern Brazilian folk-rock, earning critical acclaim and dedicated audiences nationwide.
