Biography

Vanja Orico was an important Brazilian singer, actress, and filmmaker, standing out as one of the great muses of the Cangaço Cycle in national cinema. She began her international trajectory by singing in the Italian film Mulheres e Luzes (1950), by Federico Fellini, while studying music in Europe, achieving enormous prominence shortly afterward by performing the theme song Mulher rendeira in O Cangaceiro (1953), directed by Lima Barreto. This success led her to embark on international tours through Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States, in addition to recording albums in France and establishing herself as a record-breaking album seller in Brazil.

Throughout her career, Vanja was linked to remarkable productions in Brazilian cinematography, acting in feature films such as Lampião, o rei do cangaço (1964), Cangaceiros de Lampião (1967), Independência ou Morte (1972), and Ele, o boto (1987). Alongside her acting on the big screen, she consolidated a solid musical career by singing roots music and popular themes, sharing the stages and the recognition of the era with major names in national culture. She also demonstrated versatility by directing the film O segredo da rosa in 1973.

Daughter of the diplomat and writer Osvaldo Orico and mother of the filmmaker Adolfo Rosenthal, Vanja left an indelible legacy in the country's music and cinema. In her final years, she faced Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 2015, in Rio de Janeiro, a victim of bowel cancer. Her work remains alive as a testimony to the expressive strength of artists like her and Carmen Miranda in spreading Brazilian culture throughout the world.
