Biography

Veludo was a Brazilian progressive rock band formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1974. The band emerged from the ashes of Veludo Elétrico, which featured future stars Lulu Santos and Fernando Gama. The initial lineup of Veludo included Elias Mizrahi on keyboards, Paulo de Castro on guitar, Gustavo Schoeter on drums, and Pedro Jaguaribe on bass. They were known for their complex musical arrangements and virtuosic performances, drawing influences from international progressive rock acts like Yes and King Crimson, while also incorporating Brazilian musical elements.

Throughout their initial run, Veludo faced challenges in securing a record deal, with no major label willing to invest in their experimental sound. Despite this, they gained a reputation for their powerful live shows, including performances at festivals like Hollywood Rock and Banana Progressiva. Their music often featured intricate instrumental passages, organ-heavy soundscapes, and ambitious compositions, reflecting the vibrant progressive rock scene in Brazil during the 1970s. The band's journey was marked by several lineup changes, with members like Nelsinho Laranjeiras and Ari Mendes joining and departing over time.

Veludo disbanded in 1978 but has since experienced several reunions and continues to release new material.
