Biography

Vera Astrachan is one of Brazil's most distinguished pianists, celebrated for her musicality, technical rigor, and interpretive refinement. Born in Rio de Janeiro, she began her musical studies with Arnaldo Estrella and graduated with top honors from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Her academic journey continued with advanced studies in Europe and the United States, under the tutelage of renowned masters such as Hans Graf and Bruno Seidlhofer in Vienna, Ilona Kabos in London, and Joaquin Nin-Culmell in Berkeley. Astrachan's international career has seen her perform in major musical centers across Europe and North America, including Vienna, Paris, London, Lisbon, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She has also recorded for the BBC in London and for French Radio and Television.

Throughout her career, Astrachan has received numerous accolades, including the First Prize at the Backhaus Competition, dedicated to Beethoven's works, the Jeunesses Musicales Prize in Berlin, and the APCA Award for Best Soloist of the Year in 1978. In Brazil, she has graced the stage as a soloist with the country's leading orchestras, collaborating with esteemed conductors like Eleazar de Carvalho, Camargo Guarnieri, and Isaac Karabtchevsky. As a recitalist, she has performed in prestigious concert halls nationwide, and in chamber music, she has partnered with notable musicians such as clarinetist Alain Damiens and violinist Elisa Fukuda, with whom she has maintained a duo for over three decades.

Astrachan has also been instrumental in premiering significant works in Brazil. She gave the first Brazilian performance of Francisco Mignone's Sonata No. 4 and Lorenzo Fernandez's Variations on a Brazilian Folk Theme. Her repertoire includes notable interpretations of works by composers such as César Franck, Maurice Ravel, and Robert Schumann, with a CD recording of Schumann and Ravel's works released in 2004 receiving critical acclaim. As of April 2025, she celebrated her 80th birthday, continuing her active career with scheduled performances.
