Biography
Vicente Moreira Barreto was born in Conceição do Coité, in Bahia, on April 5, 1950. Raised in Serrinha, he received strong cultural influence from Northeastern manifestations, such as performances by cantadores, forró musicians, and renowned artists of the genre. In his adolescence, he began his artistic journey, even joining the city's municipal orchestra before seeking new horizons in the country's large urban centers.
At the age of twenty, he moved to Rio de Janeiro and later to São Paulo to consolidate his career in music. Although he initially moved away from his Northeastern roots, he established important partnerships and had compositions recorded by major names in MPB and Northeastern music, such as Alceu Valença, with whom he co-wrote the classic "Morena Tropicana," in addition to working with Tom Zé, Vinicius de Moraes, and Chico César.
Throughout more than five decades residing in the capital of São Paulo, he has built a solid discography marked by strong Brazilianness and partnerships with renowned interpreters such as Ney Matogrosso, Elba Ramalho, and Maria Bethânia. In recognition of his cultural contribution, he received the title of honorary citizen of São Paulo in 2024, keeping his musical legacy alive alongside his son, the fellow musician and producer Rafa Barreto.
