Biography

Vicente Celestino was one of the most celebrated Brazilian singers of the first half of the twentieth century, known for his powerful voice and long-lasting career. Born in Rio de Janeiro to Italian immigrants, he started working at a young age before discovering his passion for music after attending a recital by Baiano and Eduardo das Neves. He rose to prominence through theatrical performances and recordings, eventually becoming a massive recording star with hits like "Flor do Mal" and "O Ébrio".

Throughout his career, Celestino adapted to changing musical technologies, transitioning from acoustic recordings to electrical recording systems where his exceptionally powerful voice initially posed a unique challenge. He starred in and composed music for popular cinematic adaptations of his own theatrical works, directed by his wife Gilda Abreu. His enduring popularity bridged different generations of Brazilian music, eventually earning admiration from prominent artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Marisa Monte.

Celestino remained active until his death in 1968 in São Paulo, where he was preparing for a television appearance associated with the tropicalist movement. Over decades of recording, he left behind a vast legacy of 78 RPM records, LPs, and beloved compositions that cemented his status as a legendary figure in Brazilian popular song. His contributions to national culture continue to be celebrated through archives and museums dedicated to his life and art.
