Biography

Victor Assis Brasil was one of the most prominent and acclaimed saxophonists in the history of instrumental jazz in Brazil. Born in Rio de Janeiro and twin brother of classical pianist João Carlos Assis Brasil, he began his professional career in the 1960s, quickly standing out in the jam sessions of Rio's nightclubs under the strong influence of bossa nova and jazz. His consecration began to take shape with the release of fundamental albums such as Desenhos and Trajeto, which solidified his name at the vanguard of samba-jazz and Brazilian instrumental music.

Seeking to refine his technique and theoretical knowledge, he studied with Paulo Moura before winning international competitions in Austria and Germany, which earned him a scholarship at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in the United States. During his time abroad and after his definitive return to Brazil, Victor developed a sophisticated compositional language, masterfully uniting elements of jazz, classical music, and MPB. Throughout his career, he had the opportunity to play alongside great international and national exponents, leaving a striking discography that includes iconic works dedicated to the oeuvre of Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Unfortunately, his career was cut short prematurely in 1981, when he passed away at the age of thirty-five due to a rare circulatory disease. Posthumously, hundreds of unpublished scores were found at his residence and handed over to his brother, further revealing the brilliance of his creative process. Even facing the historical difficulties of valuing instrumental music in the country, Victor Assis Brasil remains a true master of improvisation and an unquestionable pillar of Brazilian musical modernity.
