Biography

Virgem Atômica was a Brazilian heavy metal and hard rock band formed in São Sebastião do Caí, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1984. The band is considered a pioneer in the Rio Grande do Sul heavy rock scene, having released the LP "Tempos Vencidos" in 1986, which was the first record of the genre entirely produced and edited in the state. The original lineup featured Paulo César Peters on vocals, Marcos Fernandez on guitar, Mauricio Victor on bass, and Luiz Couto on drums.

The album "Tempos Vencidos" was recorded at Eger Studios in Porto Alegre, and quickly became a cult item among heavy metal and hard rock fans and researchers, both in Brazil and abroad. The reception of the record was remarkable, with highlights in newspapers such as Zero Hora and Correio do Povo, in addition to interviews on major radio stations. Following the release, Paulo César Peters and Mauricio Victor left the band, being replaced by Felipe Di Martino and Sandro Siqueira, respectively. With this new lineup, Virgem Atômica remained active in the Rio Grande do Sul rock scene until the early 1990s, when they ended their activities.

Recently, in 2020, the record label Som de Peso reissued the LP "Tempos Vencidos", making new vinyl records available as well as putting the album on major digital platforms. The band even considered a possible return to the stage, but information about new activities has not been confirmed. Virgem Atômica left an important legacy for Brazilian heavy rock, being remembered as one of the precursors of the genre in the south of the country, influencing later generations of musicians.
