Biography

Viriato Ferreira was born in the city of Rio de Janeiro on April 24, 1930, where he built a remarkable career as a costume designer and carnival artist. Before shining in the Rio carnival, he dedicated many years to revue theater, an environment where he honed the ability to create light, comfortable costumes with a strong visual appeal, trademarks of his artistic journey in samba schools. His relationship with the festivity began when he paraded as a highlight for Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, paving the way for his establishment in the field.

Throughout his career, he collaborated with important names of the Brazilian carnival, having worked alongside Joãosinho Trinta at Beija-Flor to achieve several successes. Later, he assumed the role of head carnival designer in traditional associations such as Portela — where he won the 1980 championship with the plot Hoje tem marmelada — and Imperatriz Leopoldinense, signing memorable parades such as O que é que a banana tem in 1991. Between 1985 and 1987, he joined the carnival commission of Tradição, collaborating with prominent artists like Maria Augusta and Rosa Magalhães.

Viriato passed away in his hometown on September 12, 1992, leaving an indelible legacy for Brazilian popular culture. His importance to the Rio de Janeiro carnival continued to be celebrated posthumously, receiving tributes in parades by Imperatriz Leopoldinense in 2009 and Acadêmicos da Rocinha in 2017. The brilliance of his creations remains alive in the memory of the samba schools and in the history of the great Rio carnivals.
