Biography

Virna Lisi is a Brazilian band that emerged in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, in 1989. From their inception, the band distinguished itself by blending post-punk elements with traditional Brazilian musical styles, such as samba, congada, moda de viola, and marujada. This unique fusion was groundbreaking, as no prior punk group had attempted such a synthesis, and it left a significant impact on subsequent Brazilian artists like Chico Science, Nação Zumbi, and Raimundos.

The band's debut album, "Esperar o Quê?", released in 1992, garnered attention and opened doors to major rock festivals, including the Monsters of Rock Tour in Brazil and Argentina in 1995. Virna Lisi produced a music video for the song "Esperar o Quê" which was featured on MTV Brasil. Their sound is characterized by a combination of distorted guitars and a robust rhythmic section, with lyrics that often suggest a sonorous-percussive evolution.

After releasing two more albums, the band dissolved in 1997. However, the legacy of Virna Lisi continued. In 2000, former members César Maurício and Ronaldo Gino reunited to form Radar Tantã, which received a Video Music Brasil Award from MTV Brasil that same year. Another former member, Marcelo de Paula, carried the Virna Lisi lineage forward by forming his own band, The Paula.
