Biography
Vítor Martins is a distinguished Brazilian composer and lyricist, born in 1944 in Ituverava, São Paulo. He is most celebrated for his long-standing and prolific songwriting partnership with the musician Ivan Lins, which began with the landmark composition "Abre Alas." This collaboration became one of the most successful in the history of Música Popular Brasileira (MPB), resulting in dozens of hits that blended sophisticated harmonies with poetic, often politically charged lyrics during the transition from the military dictatorship to democracy. \n Martins' works have been recorded by some of the most iconic voices in Brazil, including Elis Regina, Simone, and Tim Maia. In addition to his success within Brazil, his compositions gained significant international recognition, being covered by legendary figures in jazz and pop such as Sarah Vaughan and Quincy Jones. In 1991, Martins expanded his influence on the industry by co-founding the record label Velas (now Galeão) with Ivan Lins. The label was instrumental in launching and supporting the careers of influential artists like Lenine, Guinga, and Chico César, solidifying Martins' role as a key architect of contemporary Brazilian music.
