Biography

Vulcano is a pioneering Brazilian death metal and black metal band formed in Santos, São Paulo, in 1981 by Zhema Rodero, Paulo Magrão, and Carli Cooper. Throughout their extensive career, they established themselves as a foundational force in the Brazilian extreme metal underground, notably being voted the greatest rock band in the history of Santos by the newspaper A Tribuna in 2016, surpassing other prominent local acts like Charlie Brown Jr. Over the decades, the band underwent numerous line-up changes while releasing influential albums such as Bloody Vengeance in 1986 and Anthropophagy in 1987. Their gritty production and aggressive style helped pave the way for heavy metal heavyweights in the country, maintaining a fierce independence and releasing material through labels like Cogumelo Records.

In the subsequent decades, Vulcano continued to tour internationally and release new material, overcoming tragedies such as the death of guitarist Soto Jr. in 2001. With members like vocalist Luiz Carlos Louzada joining the fold, the group expanded their reach, embarking on extensive European tours and issuing albums like Drowning in Blood and Stone Orange. Their enduring legacy in Brazilian metal was further cemented by documentaries detailing their history, keeping the spirit of early South American extreme metal alive alongside contemporaries like Sarcófago and Sepultura.
