Biography

Wagner Moura Lamounier is a Brazilian heavy metal musician and economist, widely recognized as one of the pioneers of the black metal genre. Born in Belo Horizonte, he rose to prominence as the original vocalist and a founding member of the influential extreme metal band Sepultura, before leaving the group in its early stages. Following his departure from Sepultura, Lamounier became the frontman, vocalist, and guitarist for the legendary extreme metal band Sarcófago, which he led from 1985 until 2000. Under his leadership, Sarcófago achieved international acclaim and inspired numerous black and dark metal acts across the globe with their aggressive sound and provocative lyrics.

After concluding his active musical career around the turn of the millennium, Lamounier transitioned into academia and pursued a distinguished path in economics. He earned a doctorate in economics from the Universidade Federal de Viçosa and established himself as a respected researcher and professor. His academic trajectory includes prominent roles at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, where he leads the Capital Markets Research Group and teaches graduate-level courses in corporate finance and applied statistics.

Lamounier's legacy remains deeply intertwined with the origins of Brazilian heavy metal, bridging the worlds of underground extreme music alongside contemporaries like Sepultura. His dual journey from shaping the extreme metal underground to achieving academic excellence reflects a remarkably diverse life path. Today, while he no longer records or performs music, his contributions to the development of black metal continue to be celebrated internationally within the heavy metal community.
