Waldick Soriano was a prominent Brazilian singer and songwriter, recognized as an icon of popular romantic music often pejoratively referred to as brega or cafona. Born in Caetité, Bahia, he spent his youth in a bohemian lifestyle before moving to São Paulo, where he worked various odd jobs such as a laborer, shoeshine boy, and prospector before achieving fame in the 1950s with his hit song "Quem és tu?". He became famously distinct for his heart-wrenching heartbreak songs, known as "dor-de-cotovelo", alongside a revolutionary personal style characterized by black clothes and dark glasses.

Throughout his career, Soriano produced numerous massive hits that cemented his legacy in Brazilian popular culture, including "Tortura de Amor" and his signature anthem "Eu não sou cachorro não". His distinct musical style and cultural impact were later analyzed by cultural historians such as Paulo Cesar de Araújo, shedding light on the marginalization faced by popular romantic music during the military dictatorship. Beyond his musical endeavors, Soriano also ventured into cinema and television, starring in biographical and dramatic films such as "Paixão de um Homem" and making special television appearances alongside media figures like Silvio Santos and Jô Soares.

Soriano passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 2008 after a battle with prostate cancer, though his remains were later relocated to his hometown of Caetité.
