Biography
Walter Areia is a highly acclaimed luso-Brazilian bassist, composer, and producer, born in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. He was a pivotal member of Mundo Livre S/A for 14 years, a pioneering band of the Mangue Beat movement in Recife, which garnered significant recognition, including the "Order of Cultural Merit" in 2005 and the "Brazilian Music Award" in 2012.
Areia's musical journey is characterized by innovation and a deep exploration of cultural connections. He has collaborated with international artists such as Norwegian guitarist Steinar Aadnekvam, Colombian saxophonist Antonio Arnedo, and Afrobeat co-creator Tony Allen. He has also shared stages with prominent Brazilian artists like Arto Lindsay, Naná Vasconcelos, Alceu Valença, Otto, Nação Zumbi, and DJ Dolores.
In 2016, Areia relocated to Lisbon, Portugal, to reconnect with his Portuguese heritage. In Lisbon, he has engaged in numerous musical collaborations and developed workshops, including the "Musica Aberta (Open Music)" workshop. He frequently explores the world of Fado, performing in renowned venues, while also pursuing his own compositional projects in various formats, gaining recognition in the jazz scene.
His instrumental projects, such as "Areia e Grupo de Música Aberta" (Areia and Open Music Group), blend Brazilian regional music with jazz, often described as "open music" to emphasize its improvisational and genre-bending nature. Areia's work often reflects personal memories and the cultural ties between Brazil and Portugal, as seen in projects like "Reabraço."
