Biography

Walter Rosa (1925-2002) was a renowned Brazilian composer, singer, and interpreter, with a career deeply rooted in samba.

His musical journey began early, at eight years of age, frequenting the carnival block Filhos do Deserto, in Rio de Janeiro, where he had his first contact with samba and learned to play string and percussion instruments. At 17, he joined the Recreio de Inhaúma block, where he met great names of samba, such as Paulo da Portela, with whom he developed a strong friendship. In the 1950s, Walter Rosa became a member of the composer's wing of G.R.E.S. Portela, one of the most traditional samba schools in Rio de Janeiro, where he composed plot sambas that marked the history of the association, including the one from 1960, "Rio, capital eterna do samba".

Throughout his career, Walter Rosa was a partner of several important composers of the genre, such as Candeia, Silas de Oliveira, Monarco, and Jorginho Pessanha. His compositions were interpreted by great names of MPB, such as Elizeth Cardoso, Clara Nunes, Martinho da Vila, and Roberto Silva. In addition to his work as a musician, Walter Rosa also had his personal life marked by his marriage to Lilibeth Monteiro de Carvalho. He passed away on January 24, 2002, leaving an inestimable legacy for Brazilian popular music, especially for samba and Portela.
